2022 – International Rugby Experience, O’Connell Street, Limerick
The International Rugby Experience was constructed as new cultural institution and visitor experience to honour the worldwide game of rugby. Located in the heart of Limerick, this ambitious project sought to reinvigorate the city centre, complement the existing local arts and heritage attractions and forge links with Munster rugby. A commercial failure, the building by Níall McLaughlin Architects is however a striking exercise in brickwork. The building is crowned with a public hall at the top. A grand entrance portico addresses the main street, providing shelter and creating a public space. The interiors have an almost monastic quality with their arcades and columns. Closed in late 2024 and awaits a new use.
