2021 – Qaumajuq, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg, Canada
The 2020 addition of the Inuit Art Centre, Qaumajuq, was designed by award-winning American architect Micheal Maltzan, with local architectural firm, Cibinel Architects, acting as the Associate and Technical Architect in Winnipeg. Qaumajuq houses the Gallery’s celebrated collection of contemporary Inuit art and provides new facilities for an expanded studio art and educational program. The monumental, sculptural walls evoke the immense geographic features that are the background of many Inuit towns and inlets. Like snow and ice these curving walls catch the light in varied ways in different light.
The interior design centers on a three-storey Glass Vault located immediately inside Qaumajuq’s entrance. The Vault’s curved glass walls extend from floor to ceiling and include shelving that follows the curvature of the enclosure. The expansive, light-filled Qilak, Main Inuit Gallery, on the building’s third level provides 8,000 square feet of open, flexible exhibition space dedicated to the display of Inuit art. This space is lit by an array of circular skylights providing a soft diffused light during the day.
