2000 – Jameson Distillery Chimney, Smithfield, Dublin
This chimney was originally the boiler house chimney for the famous Jameson Whiskey distillery and dated from 1895. It remained in use until the 1970s. The chimney is cylindrical rising to a height over 60 metres from an octagonal base.
During the redevelopment of the distillery site, openings were punched into the massive wall fronting onto Smithfield. It was also decided that adding a two-story viewing platform to the top, accessible by lift, could be a visitor attraction to offer panoramic views over Dublin. Wejchert’s glass and steel structure including the lift mechanicals is a modern contrast to the discoloured brick of the original structure beneath. Closed for several years, it is now accessible by over 200 steps up the inside of the chimney shaft and offering a great view of the city.
