Sited across from the Münster, Meier’s Stadthaus is a tourist information & arts centre for the city of Ulm. Uncomprisingly modern and in his trademark style, postcards of the city show a sea of red tiled roofs, the Münster and the white geometric blocks of the Stadthaus. In many cities Meier’s work wouldn’t be so radical, in Ulm it is like a spaceship from outer space. The design of the Ulm cathedral square had been the subject of heated argument for 105 years and there are records of 17 design competitions. Surrounded by the square and broad streets, the building stands alone and is composed of two distinct parts linked by a smaller rectangular volume.
