Wissenschaftszentrum or Science Centre or the “Wedding cake” to Berliners, whatever you want to call it, it is a startling building to see in Berlin where buildings tend to be very corporate or an imperial legacy. Part of the Kulturforum, it peers over the wall of the sculpture court of the Neue Nationalgalerie and is actually four separate buildings. Clustered around a courtyard, each building represents an historical building type: the church; stoa; campanile; and aphitheatre. A fifth building, the castle was unbuilt. The buildings are unified by the coloured stucco and have simple detailing. Window surrounds are simple rectalinear hoods.
