1976 – Community School, Ballincollig, Co. Cork
Ballincollig Community School first opened on September 14th, 1976, with 109 students and 10 teachers. In 1974 the practice, A&D Wejchert, won second prize in a competition for an experimental school design for the Department of Education, leading to several school commissions, most notably this interesting community school at Ballincollig, Co. Cork. Designed to be a bright and flexible building, using 120-degree geometry and finished in GRP wall and roof panels in three different colours. Designed with a ring-shaped circulation system with shorter arms. The ring provided for humanities and was for the older students, while the “outer branches consist of three base units for the junior years, sciences, practical arts and multi-functional areas (Dining, Music, Drama, Lecture)”. Sadly, replaced with a more traditional school building which opened in 2003.
