In 1964, a competition was held for a masterplan for the new UCD campus at Belfield. It was won by young Polish architect Andrzej Wejchert. The competition included the design of three buildings – the Arts Block, the Administration Building, and the Aula Maxima. Designed to be easily extendable, the Arts Building comprises standardised teaching rooms grouped around courtyards and circulation towers. Accommodation includes eleven lecture theatres on the lower floors with a variety of offices and teaching spaces on the upper levels. Despite the circulation towers the building has a strong horizontal appearance, which is complemented by the surrounding landscaping.
