1969 – Richardson Building, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Architect: Smith Carter Parkin / Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP
At 124 metres and 34 floors, this is one of the tallest buildings in the city, and sited at the traditional heart of the city at Portage and Main. In addition, the building has an underground concourse linked into other concourses and a small underground mall – Winnipeg’s riposte to the underground city of Montreal. Externally the building is incredibly repetitive – although the simplicity of the repeating pattern does give the tower a feeling of solidity – and contributes to the windswept nature of the intersection.
