A tall and striking landmark on Portage Avenue, this hotel is in a Brutalist style and finished in heavily textured concreted. It gains extra height from placing the bedroom accommodation above the nine-storey parkade, The parkades ramp provides a prominent design feature to the secondary elevation along Smith Street. Originally when constructed the hotel also contained two cinema auditoriums.

The rendering shown in the launch advert for the Northstar Inn, as it was, shows a few differences from the building as completed, notably the lack of the projecting bay on the corner, and a deeper recess between the two volumes of the building.
