Designed to replace the original North Station which opened in 1864. In 1966 to commemorate the fifty-year anniversary of the Easter Rising, CIE renamed its stations after significant executed figures in the Rising. So, the station was renamed after Joseph Plunkett. The replacement station opened in late 1968 but wasn’t officially opened until March 1969. The building is two storeys of office accommodation over a small pavilion that contains the passenger concourse. This has a large floorplate than the floors above. The interior concourse is small but brightly lit with clerestory windows between the floors above and the roofline of the pavilion.
