1968 – Our Lady of the Wayside, Creeragh, Co. Galway

Architect: Leo Mansfield

0192

The Church was designed by Clifden architect Leo Mansfield (1934-98) and dedicated in 1968. The interior is simple with a soaring pine-clad roof, and a massive and beautiful stained glass window by artist Phyllis Burke (b.1930) depicting Our Lady in the traditional red shawl of Connemara. The tabernacle and crucifix are by Patrick McElroy (1923-2008). Brian de Breffny in his 1976 book ‘Churches and Abbeys of Ireland’, describes it as “like a pegged-down tent on the windswept Connemara plain”.
