1967 – Marriott Château Champlain, Montreal, Quebec

Architect: Roger D’Astous & Jean-Paul Pothier

Constructed by CP Hotels to accommodate crowds visiting Expo 67 as Le Château Champlain. After CP Hotels purchased CN Hotels in 1988, they aquired the larger adjacent Queen Elizabeth Hotel. As a result, they sold Le Château Champlain in 1991. It is thought that the semi-circular windows were intended by the designers as a reference to the Romanesque Revival arches of nearby Windsor Station, another Canadian Pacific property. Interestingly in a more modern idiom, D’Astous was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin Fellowship for a year, and the Château Champlain’s arches are similar to those on the Marin County Civic Center which started construction in 1960. Marin County was Wright’s last commission. The tower is over 450 feet high with forty floors.
