1967 – Former Hotel, Castlefreke, Co. Cork

Architect: Klaus Kirsten, Kirsten & Nather

0552

A modern hotel, almost like a 1960s American motel in concept, spread across a hillside with amazing views over the sea, this hotel was designed by a German architect Klaus Kirsten. He studied architecture under Hans Scharoun, Willy Kremer and Herta Hammerbacher at the TU Berlin. With Heinz Nather, who had studied in Berlin at the same time, he ran the architectural firm Kirsten & Nather in Berlin from 1957 until his death in 1999. They were influenced by architecture from Italy and the United States, and they constructed unconventional, open buildings (especially as domestic architecture) with free forms, mostly for private commissions in the 1950s and 1960s.

While half the bedrooms face the sea, most of the others have views back inland towards Castlefreke Castle. Part of the development also included eleven independent chalets closer to the coast. The communal area is two floors alongside an outdoor pool while the sleeping accommodations is one level spread across the hillside behind. Kirsten later help run the hotel for some years from 1968 onwards, while also running his practice in Berlin. After being derelict for many years, the building is currently under restoration. now called the Little Island Resort.
