1962 – Royal Exchange Assurance, College Green, Dublin

Architect: J. Hubert Brown

0114

Royal Exchange Assurance built their first building on this site in 1880 to designs by T.N. Deane & Son. The company merged with Guardian Assurance in 1968. Very much of its time, it continues the height of the rest of the block. The brick wall at the corner of Anglesea Street is designed to soften the impact of the vertical concrete columns on the facades, which emerge from behind it to form the pavilion-like top floor. It also helps disguise the irregularity of the site. Mostly intact except at street level where a retail unit has been installed. The plaques on the side of the building symbolised various sectors of the business.

The architect John Hubert Brown studied architecture at Liverpool University, and afterwards became an assistant architect to the Derry City Engineer and Surveyor. After World War II he set up in private practice at 33 Molesworth Street, Dublin, and retired back to England in the 1980s.
