1961 – Restaurant, Brown Thomas, Grafton Street Dublin

One of a series of interiors by Sam Stephenson for Brown Thomas in their old location on the eastern side of Grafton Street. This restaurant opened in 1961 and was a popular spot for some years, later known as the Social and Personal Restaurant, it was also used for art openings and as such was the centre of a certain social circle including artists and those with money.

According to the Dictionary of Irish Biography, Stephenson “…did interior design on contract to the Brown Thomas department store on Grafton Street, remodelling his office-studio in the store’s attic as a striking, showpiece Japanese interior (1958). “
