1960 – Goldberg’s Department Store, Tollcross, Edinburgh

Architect: J. & F. Johnston & Partners

0010

Goldberg’s Department Store opened in 1960 at High Riggs in Tollcross and was intended to be the focal point in a new road system for Tollcross – part of the unrealised inner ring road. An imposing five floor building, with an entrance facade of marble and glass flanked by copper sculptures. The store boasted a convenient onsite carpark, a in-store creche, “Italian” roof garden with views of the Castle, and a restaurant. One of the dominant retail destinations throughout the 60s and 70s but competition from elsewhere in Edinburgh, made trading conditions difficult throughout the 1980s. Goldberg’s closed in 1990, the building was demolished in 1996.
