Quite a distinctive bridge in prestressed concrete with a noticeable rise to the centre. The engineer William O’Connell (1893-1966) first came to prominence in 1945, when he won the international competition for designing this bridge over the river. Originally opened on 10 September 1959 but by the 1990s it was suffering from severe corrosion and at the end of life. In 1997 over a 10-week period, the whole superstructure was broken up, and the piers and abutments reconstructed.
