1959 – Transport House, High Street, Belfast
A modernist office building constructed for the Amalgamated Transport & General Workers Union, comprising two joined blocks, one five stories and the other seven stories. The building is mostly clad in green faience and includes a distinctive tiled mural facing onto High Street. The slightly concave mural depicts Belfast’s diverse industries and includes an airplane, construction cranes, a ship, a public transport bus, and workers in a line.
An inscription near the entrance to the building reads: “This stone was laid on the 25th October 1958 by Frank Cousins Esq. General Secretary of the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union in the presence of the Rt. Hon The Lord Mayor of Belfast Alderman Major William Cecil McKee J.P. E.R.D. and Norman Kennedy Esq. Irish Secretary at A.T.&G.W.U. and a distinguished gathering of civic and union representatives / Carville & Sons Ltd Contractors / J.J. Brennan & W.R.P. Bowden, Architects & Engineers”.
