1959 – Brown & Polson / Knorr, Davitt Road, Inchicore, Dublin
Brown & Polson originally started out as a starch manufacturer in Scotland, but eventually branched into other cooking ingredients such as cornflower, and dessert mixtures. Acquired by an American company in 1935 who also later acquired Knorr in the 1950s before being brought into Unilever. Brown & Polson plants in the UK were making Knorr products under licence. So, although called the Brown & Polson factory early on, it quickly became the Knorr factory.
Costing £200,000, it was designed by Patrick Scott of Michael Scott & Associates. A vision of a modern industrialising Ireland with flat roofs, bright office accommodation with clerestory windows, and covered walkways linking parts of the plant.
Unilever acquired Knorr in 2000 along with some other brands of the American company Bestfoods. Unilever owned both this building and the adjacent Lyons Tea plant. After closure, and sitting empty for some years, it was destroyed by fire in 2009 and the entire site cleared for redevelopment.
