1958 – Carolan Grammar School for Girls, Belfast
Architect: Donald Shanks, Principal Architect to Belfast Education Committee
Constructed over the period 1957-58, the school building featured stone gable walls with curtain wall glazing over the three floors. Donald Shanks later formed Shanks Leighton Kennedy FitzGerald with Edwin Leighton in 1960, joined by Jim Kennedy in 1964 and by Joe FitzGerald in 1965. The firm was responsible for the design of many significant buildings in Northern Ireland during the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s, including several schools as Victoria College Belfast, Portadown New Technical College, and the Model School, Enniskillen. The Carolan Grammar School merged in 1989 with the all-boys’ Annadale Grammar School to become a single school Wellington College Belfast. Moved to a new campus in 2002.
