1957 – Former Canadian Bank of Commerce, Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Architect: Green Blankstein Russell
Purpose built bank branch after a fire razed the previous building on the site. Previously the Canadian Bank of Commerce branch on Portage was a block eastwards. A single height space, the windows were originally almost floor to ceiling. The banking hall was lit by tall windows to Hargrave Street with a streamlined moderne interior – a restrained but imposing space. The Canadian Bank of Commerce merged in 1961 with the Imperial Bank of Canada to form the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. Later a nightclub in the 1990s, a branch of the Royal Bank of Canada, and now a television studio for the Aboriginal People’s Television Network.
