1952 – St. Luke’s Cancer Hospital, Rathgar, Dublin
Architect: TP Kennedy & Partners
Part of the modernisation of the Irish healthcare system in the 1950s when larger specialised hospitals were constructed including sanatoriums and orthopedic units. Constructed between 1951 and 1954 in the grounds of a large Victorian house belonging to the Hely family called Oakland, patients were first accepted in 1954, although out-patients had been using the facilities before. At opening the Hospital contained 160 beds, had 4 Deep Therapy Units, and an Isotope Laboratory. Largely a low sprawling design, some of the original building are gone or subsumed into later developments on the site. The Outpatients Department won the RIAI Gold Medal for 1950-52.
