1952 – Ballyowen Sanatorium, Co. Dublin
The new sanatorium at Ballyowen was formally handed over on 28th April 1952. This was later reopened as a psychiatric hospital, St. Loman’s, in 1961. The illustrations show the main entrance with the chapel on the right. The ward building illustrated is inline with the treatment of TB in those days, with a row of opening doors allowing the patients to be wheeled out for fresh air and sunshine on the verandahs. Low buildings, the sole vertical element is the campanile on the chapel.
Designed to be a 250-bed sanatorium for children, the hospital was repurposed during construction. A chalet type hospital, the buildings are linked by enclosed corridors. Most of the structures were designed with a life expectancy of 20 years and constructed by prefabrication techniques on site while the foundations were being laid. The site has been redeveloped.
