1949 – College of Further Education, Ballsbridge, Dublin
Architect: Donnelly & Martin
Typical of the softer modernism used in educational buildings across Ireland, north and south, this was constructed as a School of Domestic Science. In a rapidly modernising Ireland, education was seen a key element in reducing poverty and moving the country forward. This eventually led to free secondary education and a building boom of schools in the 1960s. This building was commissioned in 1944 and has two major elevations, one to the street and one to the River Dodder which is visible from the adjacent bridge. A mixture of materials, planes and volumes make the college almost apologetic in its 1940s modernity.
