1935 – Cooley Alcohol Factory, Co. Louth

One of five industrial potato alcohol plants constructed to a similar design around Ireland by the Irish Government. Relatively nearby is another example at Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan with others in Donegal, Mayo, and Sligo. The architect Jan Diederik Postma was Dutch and brought current Dutch architectural thinking to the factories. The factories were among the earliest industrial buildings in the International Modern style in Ireland with flat roofs and metal framed windows. This factory was converted into a consumer alcohol distillery and became known as Cooley Distillery now part of Beam Suntory.
