Architect: Samuel Stevenson
The Orpheus Building was once part of Belfast’s largest department store. Finished in red brick with granite and Portland stone detailing and an exuberant Art Deco interior. The Co-operative Society, which owned and ran it, offered dividends to loyal customers. It also boasted a popular restaurant and ballroom. It eventually closed its doors in the mid-1980s and the building was used by the University of Ulster. The ballroom, on the top floor, was partitioned into studio space for artists. Demolished in 2015 by the University of Ulster.
