1929 – Toronto Star Building, Toronto, Canada
Architect: Chapman & Oxley
The second tallest building yet demolished, the Toronto Star newspaper occupied the bottom six floors of this Art Deco tower. The 21st floor housed the newspaper’s radio studios. The tower was Superman cartoonist Joe Shuster’s initial reference for drawing the Daily Planet building where Clark Kent works. A Toronto native, Shuster had previously worked as a delivery boy for The Star. The building was demolished in 1972 to make way for the construction of First Canadian Place.
