1927 – Orpheum Theatre, Vancouver, British Columbia
Architect: B. Marcus Priteca
Designed by B. Marcus Priteca (1889-1971) of Seattle, but born and educated in Scotland, who designed 22 theaters for the Pantages circuit and another 128 for other theater owners. Like many theatres or cinemas across Canada, the Orpheum is largely sited to the rear with only a small frontage in the more expensive real estate of Granville Street. Grand staircases and corridors lead to a series of lobbies and then to the grand and richly decorated auditorium with three thousand seats. Opened as Vancouver’s biggest vaudeville house, it later transitioned into a movie palace and eventually a concert hall. Now the permanent home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
