1927 – No 48-49 St. Patrick’s Street, Cork

Architect: W.H. Hill & Son

Former Burtons store on St. Patrick’s Street now in use by another retailer with upper floors used as storage. A very unsympathetic shop façade does this fine stone building no favours. With some love and care, this could look great. The Burtons logo is carved into the small pediment at rooflevel.

As with other Burton’s stores, the foundation stone was laid by one of Montague Burton’s children, some of whom were quite young. Cork is no different bearing the inscription “This stone laid by Barbara Jessie Burton 1927”. Barbara would have been eighteen at this time.
