1926 – Former Rose Theatre, Sargent Avenue, Winnipeg
Architect: Max Blankstein
Described as a “beautiful and commodious playhouse” by a local newspaper, the Rose Theatre opened as a neighbourhood cinema on December 9, 1926. The building had two retail units to the street flanking the main vestibule and a balcony level. In total It had 622 seats, and unusually, 31 wicker chairs, possibly in the balcony at the rear of the hall.
It closed in the mid 1980s after a variety of owners including one who ran it as risqué cinema with massage parlour. Since then, converted out of its cinema arrangement with the balcony extended to a full floor. The exterior has been altered at street level but the decorative brickwork on the upper façade is still evident.
