1918 – Surge Tank, St. Boniface, Winnipeg
Built in 1918, this water tank is designed to hold thousands of litres of drinking water from the aqueduct from which the city gets its water. In the event of too much pressure, water is released from the top to flow into the nearby river. For such a utilitarian structure, this quality of this cylindrical building is undeniable – from the robust stonework at the bottom to the great brickwork with a detailed pattern, and then a fine cornice above.
