According to the architectural press of the day, the main aim of the design was to give the maximum amount of space for the banking hakk. This was obtained by enclosing the managers’ rooms with wood and glass screens instead of solid plaster partitions, and by putting the vaults, stairs, etc., in subsidiary positions. Designed as three storeys in height so as to conform with the other adjacent buildings and also with the object of renting the upper floors for offices. By forming a circular counter with the managers’s room on one side and the ladies’ room on the other, it created a symmetrical and impressive effect. The walls were panelled in Caen stone and plaster with ornamental panels at intervals around the room. The ceilings were beamed or coffered with enriched ornament. Later a branch of the Bank of Montreal after the 1923 merger, demolished in 1964.
