1915 – Canadian Northern Railway Station, Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada

Designed by one of Canada’s most prolific rail architects of the time, but one who generally never worked west of Manitoba. John Schofield was the head Canadian Northern Railway (CNoR) Draftsman based in Winnipeg, and after the Canadian National Railway (CNR) was formed a number of years later, he became head architect, based in Montreal. Thereafter, he was involved in the design of virtually every CNR train station and hotel from coast to coast. Although Schofield primarily worked in Manitoba and central Canada for the CNoR, he did design three stations in the west, Estevan, Saskatchewan, Hope and Chilliwack in British Columbia, all to a similar appearance, designed to be what was termed a “3rd class station”. This type of design was often reserved for small rural towns in early Canada and was identified by its living quarters for the agent, located on the second floor. Destroyed by fire in 1984, and subsequently demolished.
