1912 – British and Foreign Bible Society / Oseredok, Alexander Avenue, Winnipeg

Now the Ukrainian Cultural Centre, Oseredok, but constructed as the British and Foreign Bible Society Building or Bible House. Finished in Tyndall limestone at street level and bands of stone and brown brick on the upper levels, it’s quite a striking building sitting along on the streetscape. The architect William Bruce was born and trained in Scotland but very little is known about him. He was involved in some speculative schemes within a short-lived partnership of Smith & Bruce and later designed a prospective new city called Roblin to be built at Churchill, Manitoba. The building currently contains a museum, archives, library and art gallery.
