1911 – L’Hospice Taché, St. Boniface, Winnipeg
L’Hospice Taché, later known as Taché Hospital was a large building near St. Boniface Cathedral founded by the Grey Nuns. The earliest part of the complex (the lower wing in the photographs) was built in 1883, as Taché Academy, initially intended to be a girl’s boarding school. But it also housed orphans, and when the boarding school was closed in 1897, the building was reopened as Taché Hospice for orphans and elderly women. Between 1908 and 1910, three additional wings were constructed. The Orphanage was closed in 1935. it reached peak occupancy, 410 patients, in 1969. Closed after the completion of Centre Taché in 1973 and demolished shortly after.
