1911 – Casa Comalat, Barcelona, Spain
Dating from the final phase of the “modernista” era, constructed from 1909 to 1911, this is a highly original building comprising two façades with common elements: the Gaudiesque curve and Art Nouveau designs. Commissioned by financier Joan Comalat Aleñà to construct a five-story building that would serve as the primary residence for his family. The architect made no secret of his inspiration from the style of Gaudi, who designed the nearby Casa Batlló especially in the surreal interior. On the main facade, the windows enclosed by stalactite mullions, are a direct reference to Casa Batlló. At the top are two female figures and the obligatory sculptures of dragons and the dark green roof is somewhat reminiscent of dragon scales.
