Constructed by the Canadian Northern Railway (CNoR) in St. James, then a small town outside of Winnipeg. Despite being a separate town, it was designed as a suburban station with exterior shelter for commuters. Built to a standard plan, and described as a Second Class CNoR station, it contained a waiting room, dispatch area, freight, and baggage rooms. Pratt and the Canadian Northern strived for fairly standardised designs for a range of stations, from small rail side halts, through medium stations such as Neepawa, to larger depots at Dauphin, Saskatoon, and Edmonton.

Unlike the more rural stations at Carmen and Carberry, built around the same time, it didn’t include substantial living accommodation above for the station master. After sitting empty for several years, it was moved outside of the city in 1999 by The Vintage Locomotive Society Inc as a station for the Prairie Dog Central heritage railway.
