1909 – Casa Loma Building, 644 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Canada

Imposing apartment building on a prominent corner, with commercial units at street level. With an overbearing rooftop advertising frame, and sadly down-at-heel appearance, this building by Russell deserves better. Russell was a prolific architect in Winnipeg in the first decades of the twentieth century. The overhanging cornice is particularly fine and a rare survivor in the immediate area. As can be seen in the period photograph, the façade to Sherbrook Street has been remodelled at ground level.
