1907 – Design for new Justice & Departmental Buildings, Ottawa, Ontario
Unbuilt but striking concept for new Justice and Government Department Buildings. The winners of the competition were E & W.S. Maxwell, but their winning design was never constructed. The whole competition got bogged down in political arguments and redesigns over the next few years.
“The first prize goes to E. & W.S. Maxwell, of Montreal (No. 24). The floor plans are so simply and conveniently arranged that there appears no reason to cavil at this award so far as they are concerned, although the planning of the Justice Building is inferior to that of the main building. The architecture is disappointing, lacks impressiveness and dignity as well as picturesquenss, this last a sine qua noni in such surroundings.”
