1906 – Somerset Building, Winnipeg, Manitoba

Sadly now missing its cornice and more elaborate shop fronts, the building has been extended upwards, gaining two floors at some stage. Now without a cornice, the building is curiously banal and flat without much real three dimensionality, it lacks any real presence at streetlevel or as your eye travels upwards or along the street. Named after the developer’s mother, Somerset being her maiden name. Originally the building had quite attractive shop facades. There are still some original interior details including stairwells. The cornice was removed and the top redesigned by Moody Moore & Partners circa 1962.
