1904 – First Baptist Church, 400 Hargrave Street, Winnipeg

Architect: Langley & Burke / John H.G. Russell

0277

Construction of the original church started in 1893, designed by Toronto architects Edward Langley and Edmund Burke, with local architect Hugh McCowan supervising the $45,000 project. The building was completed the following year. The congregation continued to grow, so, in 1904, local architect J.H.G. Russell added a two-storey addition that doubled the original seating capacity to 1,500 people. In 1939, the Baptists merged with another congregation and sold this building to the Pentecostal Church. The Pentecostals reopened the building as Calvary Temple, building a new church alongside in 1974, and using the old building for other purposes. It was finally demolished in 1985, only the former bell tower remains.
