1903 – Alternative design for Union Bank Tower, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Architect: Darling & Pearson
This design was published in 1903. Historic skyscrapers tended to be split into three parts – the base, usually ground floor or first two to three floors; the shaft, the repeated floors that give the building height; and a decorative top, which could be one or more floors. Here, the decorative top is two taller floors instead of the one constructed, with the shaft being 5 floors instead of the seven constructed – making it one floor less but close to the same overall height. The more elaborate top in this design is quite attractive and balances the whole tower better visually.
