The congregation of Fisherwick was founded in 1823 as Fisherwick Place Church and was based in a church of 1827. By the end of the 19th Century, Belfast had expanded enormously, but many of Fisherwick’s members had moved away from the city centre and the Session decided that the church should move to be closer to the congregation.

Am architectural competition was held, which was won by S.P. Close, the church is typical of the late Victorian period. Unusually for a Presbyterian church it is cruciform in shape. A significant change was made to the internal layout in 1967 when a central aisle was inserted.
After completion, the original building on Fisherwick Place was sold to the Presbyterian Church of Ireland, demolished, and the Presbyterian Assembly building of 1905 constructed on the site.
