St. Mary’s Church was built in 1818 on a site donated by the local landlord, Sir Charles Denham Jephson Norreys (1799-1888) of nearby Mallow Castle. Originally a T-plan gable-fronted church, facing north and with its apse to the south. In 1900 George C. Ashlin added an entirely new front with extra bays to the nave and a western tower in a Romanesque style. The extra bays are higher than the original church, so it is possible that replacing the original may have been a future option. Ashlin was also responsible for some internal redecoration including the Corinthian-style columns and Romanesque inspired decoration. There is a fine memorial from J.J. McCarthy on an internal wall.
