On 12 August 1898 the National Trust Company of Ontario, Limited was incorporated by letters patent under the Ontario Companies Act. In 1900, National acquired the Manitoba Trust Company in Winnipeg, which gave the company its first western office. Constructed on corner of Main Street and Notre Dame East, now Pioneer Ave. The architect George Gouinlock designed several buildings for the company across eastern Canada, and had previously worked in Winnipeg as an assistant at Barber & Barber. Demolished and replaced with an office building of 1984 now known as the Bestlands Building.
