Random Building
1898 – St. Marnocks, Co. Dublin
Originally a Georgian house which was remodelled and extended by the Jameson family (of the distillery). Due to the family’s Scottish origins, the commission was given to Sir Robert Lorimer, and this remains his only work in Ireland. The exterior is restrained, but the interior is ornately decorated with plasterwork and marquetry. Throughout there are fine marble fireplaces.
“This house is situated about ten miles from Dublin, and is within a few hundred yard the sea. As the situation is very exposed the building was kept low, and a large enclosed floral garden was formed on the sheltered side of the house; along one side of this garden, and communicating with the house, an extended range of conservatories was erected. The house is built of local bricks and granite dressings. The floors are fireproof throughout.Part of the drawing-room, and the kite court, belong to a former house. The house is lit with electric light. The ceilings of the main stair-hall, vestibules, and dining-room were modelled in position by Mr. Priestley, and the walls of these places are finished in oak and inlay.” The Builder, February 12th 1898.
