After an earlier church on the site was completely gutted by a devastating fire in 1892, it was rebuilt to a design by Sir J.J. Burnet, in 1894-6. Burnet reused the existing tower and spire. It was united with the nearby Abbey Church in 1990, with the latter becoming the church for the united congregations. After a time being redundant and empty, extensive repairs, structural strengthening and internal renovation and alterations were carried out in the early 21st century. It now houses a department of Angus Council.
