“The church of St. Augustine, erected in 1884, at a cost of about £7,000, and consecrated November 8, 1886, is a building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles: under the body of the church is a large room suitable for a Sunday school: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1884. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £302, with residence, in the gift of five trustees, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Arthur Winscom Meggison, curate from 1897. Here are Congregational and Wesleyan chapels. St. Augustine’s Church House and institute, in Thicketford road, formerly a private mansion with extensive grounds, has been acquired for social and recreation purposes, and is excellently fitted up with reception, reading and lounge rooms and a billiard room; the grounds have been laid out anew and include an excellent bowling green.”
