1891 – Sheil Hospital, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal

“In a limited competition for the above hospital, between Mr. Wm . Hague, architect, and Mr. Wm . H. Byrne , architect, the plans of the latter gentleman were selected, and he has received instructions from the trustees to proceed with the working drawings. The plans were adjudicated on by Sir T.N. Deane , assisted by Drs Cruise and Hayes.”

“The ceremony of laying the foundation stone was performed early in October last by Miss Sheil, a sister of the founder, the late Dr. Simon Sheil, of Ballyshannon, who has made a bequest of £6,000 for the erection of the building. The plans have been prepared by, and the work is being carried out under the superintendence of, Mr. William H. Byrne, architect, of this city ; Mr. M’Adorey, of Dundalk, is the contractor.”
In 2017, the HSE announced a new redevelopment of the Sheil Hospital. This project will be overseen by Rhatigan Architects (Sligo) in collaboration with Tangram Architects (London). The 80 bed unit will consist of 66 single bedrooms and 7 twin bedrooms in a combination of long stay, short stay and dementia wards. The project also includes the upgrade of the existing Sheil building to accommodate a Day hospital amongst other ancillary services.
