“The estate has lately been sold for the large sum of £80,000, and is to be converted into a building estate. At present, however, it is only contemplated to erect a fringe of houses round the park, leaving the mansion and private grounds intact. Our illustration represents the first house designed for the estate by Mr. W. I. Chambers (late of Dublin), and our readers can judge whether a row of such houses, with ample grounds to each, can be an eyesore, even to this splendid estate. Chislehurst is one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods near London, possessing magnificent open commons and noble residential properties. Mr. Chambers’s aim in this design was to produce a thoroughly typical old English home. We hope shortly to be able to illustrate No. 2 house, which is more characteristic of the old homesteads of England, with their old-fashioned ingle-nooks and bays.”
